From the article: "Sub-Saharan Africa is still bearing the brunt of the HIV/Aids epidemic, a UNAids report has revealed. Almost three-quarters of deaths from Aids in 2006 occurred there and two-thirds of those living with HIV are in that area. UNAids says there are an estimated 39.5 million people now living with HIV."

This is a most aalling failure of the powers that be in that region of our small earth.Teir abuse and misuse of their greatestresource- their people! BUT this is not the most appalling part of it!!here it is.

The failure or utter disregard of the Colonial powers, their almost REFUSAL to help- not because they don't want to, but because they spend most of their money in places they shoudln be eg...

Cut into half all aid to Israel and Palestine- spend it in Africa.

Take 50% of all expenses in Iraq- spend in in Darfur and the likes!!

Cut off all aide to all Dictators!- Spend it to rebuild the rest of the world that truly and really needs it!! And while we're at it make the Royals of Britain, France, The Dutch,Spain, etc... payback what they have plundered from Africa!!!

To all the Stars, "Wannabe-Peudo-Heroes", overpaid cosmetic Doctors- please "DO-A-JOLI", or the "Mystery Santa" thing, and I beleive we'll have solved the 1st half of the problem.

*Far more has been given to Africa than has been given to Israel. The difference is, the Israelis buckle down and 'git er done'.>>>>

Nope. We've given 83.205 billion to Israel. They comprise 30% of our foreign aid budget, and exceed all foreign aid given to the countries of sub saharan Africa. Add to that the billions we've paid in the interest that WE have to pay when we borrow to give $$$ to Israel. Somethings gotta give. We've invested more in individual Israeli's than in the people of the U.S.

are you worried about africa? i am not. africa has always been there, and it will always be. aids, ebola, west nile, malaria, i am more concerned about asia and europe, can they resist? can they go through what africa is going through? lift your heads up, or climb a tree. i think a tree is better, so you can look to the past, and if you care, the future. life started in africa, and it will end there!! lol, last man standing.

Sorry for the mispellings and grammatical booboos. I get so fired up when I read things like this. I find the picture very, very, very disturbing,

I was a 4 year old, playing with kids about my age for there was no class. We blessed with the gift of reading at such an early age (4-5 yrs and in English too). And the very first News Article I ever read in English was about a story of a famine somewhere in Africa. with a similar picture of a decimated starving mother feeding her children---- would you believe--- bark of trees--- and that was 1949!This is the most vivid memory I ever had to this day and serves as my inspiration and strengthens my belief in humanity in times of despair. To see it happen now really destroys my sanity!!!

To those who can- please do something about it!!

E-X-A-C-T-A-L-Y! I consider myself to be quite a compassionate person YET, I simply cannot bring myself to be sorry for the Africans because what are we supposed to say: 'Poor Africans, they can't fornicate with every person around them without the worry of AIDS. Boohoo. Where is God's mercy.'

What you experience in life is a whole nother world from the experiences of some Africans. Your ancestors weren't used as slave labor for 400 years, and not allowed to have education. Your ancestors weren't kept at the bottom of 'evolution' through armies and murder, and horrible treatment. Africans have some 'catching up' to do.....and their circumstances are the direct result of having been treated like property and chattel by the societies that surrounded them. So easy to judge, when you've never had to struggle. REALLY struggle.

If the virus mutates and becomes airborne, we're all doomed. Simple as that. Perhaps that's the price we pay for ignoring the plight of Africans all these centuries? Karma doesn't like ugly.

It drives me to anger when I think of all those billions going to AIDS issues when there are so many other UNPREVENTABLE illnesses all around the world towards which the money could go. The stupidity of so many drives me to madness . . .

"Keep it zipped"?? What kind of idiotic and inane comment is that? What is needed is to take a lot of foreign aid (which DOES wind up on those off-shore accounts, my favorite example is the Marcos) and use it for medical research. That way, the whole world would benefit-oops, then you have that pesky need for medical world to make a profit so they would turn around a charge for it and Africa would still have a problem. Education at present is about the only thing that will help.

Have you looked at some of the stats on perverted acts committed on children lately here in the good ole USA? This is a case of the kettle calling the pot black. Sex is NOT the problem, we have the same issues here-Education ABOUT sex is needed as well as giving them the means (condums?) to help prevent the spread.

Since it started here, it is not surprising that they are the highest hit.

Has anyone found out just what started it?

Was it natural or some form of "Weapon"?

This is an honest question & if you know the answer I would like to hear it!

I watched a documentary on it. I don't know how much to agree since there are so many theories on how it evolved. But here it goes.

Back around 1950, I believe, Doctors were over there vaccinating for polio. They only brought over so much vaccine so they decided to use monkey tissue to that unknowingly was infected with the SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus) to prepare more. The oral vaccine was thought to have the infected virus. No one knew then, but after 20ys people started becoming sick and had no idea why. Then HIV was named and when they looked back to see where it may have started, it coincided with the Polio Vaccine. Sorry, if it sounds choppy, just recalling from memory. Hope I answered your question.

Exactly why are you getting so angry?? He is only stating FACT, something which I know Muslims have a very difficult time accepting.

If it disgusts you so much then maybe you should remove those terms from your wonderful Qu'ran because, in fact, it does call non-Muslims those names.

Read an article recently that studied Africn use of condoms, which is on the rise in Africa and offers hope for a solution through education. There is improvement, but we are impatient for a quicker return. I believe the article was in the New York Times recently. The US has committed a big pot of money to the issue.

It would be terrific if we had the resources to do everything, but our politicians will choose to allocate resources where it will have the best impact on our economy and safety. Since we are a capitalistic society, our leaders will most always choose to protect or enhance our economy and national security. Therefore, it doesn't surprise me that Africa is a low priority. Whether that is the most humane or not, it's the way it is.

Africa is a low priority because there is nothing there of value for us to exploit, leverage or outright commandeer. If there were rich oil fields under Sudan we'd be there in force on a "humanitarian mission", fighting the genocide in Dafur. If Chad or Botswana or Angola had natural resources we could use, or if they were nearer the middle east and offered strategic relevance, Uncle Sam would be there - chin up, chest out, cape flapping in the breeze - as the defender of the innocent and rescuer of the helpless.

But Africa (and especially the lower continent) brings little to the table but headaches. There's no upside (other than alieviating the suffering of tens of thousands, but that -by itself- stopped being a political motivator decades ago).

Thier is a cure for HIV! God has a plan for the good of man kind and if you follow this plan then HIV will go away. God's plan for sex is between a male and a female in the marriage union. God has given one man for one woman and any thing different welll welcome to the wonderful world of sin. God has never wanted man to breed as one does today free and with whom one pleases.

For anyone that wants to read more about the HIV/AIDS pandemic:

                                  http://www.aids.org/

                                  http://www.thebody.com/

It is a very scary virus. It has no favorites on who it can infect.

Many people think they can look at someone and say, "Yeah, she/he has it!" or "No, she/he's clean looking. I don't need a condom." But if that was true.... would HIV be spreading so rampantly? You CANNOT tell by looking at someone if they are infected. The lesions do not become apparent until full blown AIDS. More education needs to be given to everyone.

Lets put to rest the idea of over sexed Africans? Illegal testing of a polo virus in the late 1940s lead to this out break and it has spread via poor medical procedures, misdiagnosis (victims of flu's and fever's as result of a poor diet, malaria etc are believed to have died of aids without testing the blood and added aids deaths statistics) and race hate groups such as Eugene Terblanche's Afrikaans party admits to spreading the virus through blood banks in the south African truth and reconciliation farce, and remember former UK PM Margaret Thatcher's son was arrested in Africa after a few years ago attempting to over through the government to replace it with his own to gain control of the country. For you uneducated bigots research these facts and learn somthing . This country has had a sustained attack from all sides over the last 900 years and most of wealth we enjoyed today is because these people (past and present) have suffered so lets cut them a fcuking break.

Can you give some evidence that supports your claim that "most of wealth we enjoyed today is because these people (past and present) have suffered . . .). Although I would support such a comment regarding the Middle East, China and India, I cannot fathom what African people and resources we've exploited for our gain.

Peole in Africa having poor living conditions and little food adds to many other disease that could be fatal. The medication for HIV is also not helful to the body it actually hurts the immune system. The virus HIV should run its course and be gone in a few weeks. However with the panic of AIDs it seems as though if you have HIV and die of a disease on "The List" then they say you have AIDs. Also if you are diagnosed with HIV you start taking medication that is harmful and damages the immune system. It seems as though the best thing to do if you find out you have HIV is start living a healty life style and get checked again 3 or 4 months later, it may just be gone. Maybe we should go back to point A with Aids research and start in a different direction maybe a wrong turn was taken in all the panic. Aids funding is 10 times more than any other disease. I don't care what anyone thinks and I won't check replies to this, I just hope it helps someone.

Just to let other readers know... HIV will not go away in a couple months.. it becomes dormant on testing. The virus invades healthy immune cells so the tests do not work until they infected cells begin to replicate. You do not die from HIV/AIDS you WILL die from opportunistic diseases due to low immunity. This is not caused by the drugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HIV infects healthy cells and replicates the HIV cells. Soon your immune cells become way outnumbered regardless of drugs..

This post shows that education is still needed for everyone. Please do not read this and think that HIV will just disappear. The facts are out there.. Read and educate yourself..
