Health & Fitness – Adding to evidence that a little wine can do a heart good, a new study suggests that women who drink moderate amounts may have less inflammation in their blood vessels.
Although some studies have indicated lower rates of heart disease, the American Heart Assoc is not convinced

Over the past several decades, many studies have been published about how drinking alcohol and reduced mortality due to heart disease. Some researchers suggested that the benefit may be due to wine, especially red wine. Others are examining the potential benefits of components in red wine - flavonoids and other antioxidants - in reducing heart disease. Some of these components may be found in other foods - grapes or red grape juice. The linkage reported in many of these studies may be due to other lifestyle factors rather than alcohol. Such factors may include increased physical activity, a diet high in fruits and vegetables and lower in saturated fats No direct comparison trials have been done to determine the specific effect of wine or other alcohol on the risk of developing heart disease or stroke.

"Numerous studies have found that wine drinkers tend to have lower rates of heart disease than teetotalers do. Research also suggests that higher levels of "good" HDL cholesterol may be one reason, though not a full explanation of the benefit."
