Health & Fitness – Asparagus has a diuretic effect, and asparagine, and amino acid present in asparagus may be the source of its diuretic properties, and when excreted, gives urine a strong odor.
There used to be a column in the LA papers ages ago when I lived on the in LaLa town. It was called Dr. Hippocrates.
I remember a reader asking about the "perfume" of asparagus pee. Apparently the good doctor was fond of the vegetable, yet had no idea what they were talking about and dismissed the letter till he checked with some friends who confirmed it did the same to them.
He then researched it and discovered that the odor is due to a benign bacterium that lives in the urinary tracts of about 50% of all humans.
No idea whether that's the truth or not, but I can confirm asparagus is a vegetable I adore and produces a smell I don;t.

a lil more in the TMI category: Asparagus has similar effect on ejaculate. Pineapple has an opposite effect, or so I am told.
