a lil more in the TMI category: Asparagus has similar effect on ejaculate. Pineapple has an opposite effect, or so I am told.

Marcel Prost had an odd defintion of "perfume," that's for sure.

I voted this one up just in the hopes of seeing the phrase "Asparagus Pee" on the front page.

By the way, try brushing some olive oil on asparagus, sprinkling it with garlic, and then grill it. Now *that's* delicious...

Just had a bunch of roasted asparagus last night, FRESH yuuummy!, won't deal with the canned kind, to mushy for me.

I wonder if the white asparagus makes your pee pee have the same oder?

The oder of urine that some people have after eating asparagus is not due to asparagine. It is due to a combination of sulphur-containing compounds.

The sulfur compounds include methanethiol, dimethyl sulphide, dimethyl disulphide, bis-(methylthio)methane, dimethyl sulphoxide and dimethyl sulphone

Thanks for that feedback, I'll double check my references.

Checked, and there are conflicting reports on that one, but I'll add the other info to the article as well.

I had plenty of asparagine today.

And all I had was a steak and eggs with yogurt breakfast! My breakfast potatoes probably had some in them, too.

qp - I read somewhere it isn't the asparagus, it is a gene in your body that lets you smell it.

Some people can't smell it.

Hickory smoked asparagus with a little olive oil is oh so good. Just wrap it in some foil and pop it on the grill.

There used to be a column in the LA papers ages ago when I lived on the in LaLa town. It was called Dr. Hippocrates.

I remember a reader asking about the "perfume" of asparagus pee. Apparently the good doctor was fond of the vegetable, yet had no idea what they were talking about and dismissed the letter till he checked with some friends who confirmed it did the same to them.

He then researched it and discovered that the odor is due to a benign bacterium that lives in the urinary tracts of about 50% of all humans.

No idea whether that's the truth or not, but I can confirm asparagus is a vegetable I adore and produces a smell I don;t.

My damn cat pees on my asparagus. I thought that's where the pee came from. Huh. Learn something new everyday.

maybe for those who call asparagus pee 'perfume' I don't care if pee has rose petals floating in it, I've never smelled any pee that I would classify as perfume. eeek
