Hispanic workers die at higher rates than other laborers, with 1 in 3 of these deaths occurring in the construction industry, a government study reported Thursday.

"The study counted more than 11,000 Hispanic work-related deaths nationwide from 1992-2006. The data were culled from death certificates, police reports, workers' compensation reports and other sources."
"The researchers calculated an annual death rate of 5 per 100,000 Hispanic workers in 2006 The rate for non-Hispanic white workers was 4. For blacks, it was 3.7."

  "From 1992-96, murder on the job was the most common cause of death among Hispanic workers. Then highway accidents became the leading type of work-related fatality. Falls also have become common, and were the leading cause of death in 2000 and 2006."

    Could that be caused by employers hiring illegals knowing that they can ignore safety standards that they would have to use if they employed US citizens? This is another reason we need to crack down hard on employers that hire illegals.

        Obviously you don't work in the construction industry considering how many "illegals" work within the industry while the work conditions are dangerous at best and as we see deadly at worst. Sure there are good builders, but the majority of them here tend to look the other way when safety is concerned, especially if no American lives are at risk.

        Sounds like you're more angry at your business going away. Guess what. I have a friend who lives in the same state as you. Works as a general contractor.
        When I went around to all the various construction sites run by other people while visiting, the person in charge was 99% of the time white. Every worker? 99% mexican and day-workers. The only mexicans "in charge" were the crew chiefs who translated what the white master wanted the mexican slaves to do for him.
        If they married an American woman, by the way, they're American. And legal. And having talked to such people, they often understand that hiring other Mexicans insures that their families in Mexico get to eat.

        I have seen many construction jobs in Texas (notice one of the high death rate states). Certain companies that high illegals (day laborers) for quick turnaround jobs. These sites get in and out so quickly that in many cases the inspectors don't get in to inspect them during the job. You got workers on scaffolding without rails or safety harnesses. Even when they have the proper safety equipement, they are not trained on how to use it and they end up using it wrong. I saw a job one time where the workers (day laborers) were on a scaffold without a rail but they did have harnesses on. Except the harness were hooked to the botom of the scaffold and they were ~6ft off the ground. I noted the type of harnesses they had on (they looked like the ones I used to wear as a power plant operator). These had 6 foot decelleration straps built into them. Shades of a roadrunner cartoon.

I very seldom see anyone doing manual labor that is not Hispanic.
No surprise they have the most work-related injuries.
