In the treatment of anxiety, the role of the therapist is very important. He is the one who trains the patient as to how he can control his emotions in a troublesome situation and manipulate his thoughts to a positive outlook.

In this day and age in the U.S. most therapists are not psychiatrists, and vice versa. Psychiatrists are great for prescribing meds, but most (not all) of them are lousy therapists. I have been a mental health professional for about 16 years now and have been exposed to many different psychiatrists and therapists of various disciplines - Psychologists, Social Workers, Advanced Practice Nurses, Marriage & Family Therapists, Licensed Professional Counselors,etc..

My advice for anyone looking for a good therapist is to 1) find someone licensed who 2) has experience working in the area which is your concern and 3) with whom you feel comfortable and can open up to and feel you are being heard.

      Thats great advice.

I wish more people would stop seeing therapy and psychiatry as mutually exclusive! It's really hard to find someone who is qualified to do both, and that sucks.

Why do I experience anxiety whenever I must meet with my psychiatrist to get updated prescriptions? I guess maybe it's because it is an assembly line type of situation where I get to talk for about 5 minutes and get lectures about the psychiatrist's problems for another 25 minutes. Oh, I just love the VA system.

You have described "racing thoughts" and they are stimulated by your "anticipation" of news that you have no "control"

        over, thereby feeding your anxiety.

Whole Foods sells a wonderful variety of herbal and homeopathic remedies.

One way to combat racing thoughts is with a spray they sell

        made by Hahns.

There are pellets sold in a pez-like container for other

forms of anxiety (there are about 8-10 different forms).

Lycopodium is an effective homeopathic remedy and comes in those pellet containers.
