A big "Wag of the finger" towards those who rushed to judgment and made untoward false accusations. Presumably, this kind of settlement would cause someone(s) who screwed this particular pooch to receive a pink slip. An excellent reminder to all those in law enforcement that just because some nosy reporter asks a question, you don't necessarily HAVE to answer it. Particularly in regards to an ongoing, unfinished investigation. They should all keep in mind that at least in the press, an innuendo or vague suspicion is just as good as a guilty verdict.

Or how about an accusation from a paid Iraqi informant?
The denial of due process can get expensive. But, like all the money squandered in Iraq, it's just government money, and borrowed against the national debt at that, so - who cares!

The government settled so the evidence of their treatment of Steven Hatfill would not be exposed in a court of law. No admittance of guilt, but it cost them $5.82 million. lol.

Alls we know for certain is that the anthrax was of a strain created in a US Lab and stored at a US government military fort outside Washington DC. It was sent shortly after the mass murder in lower Manhattan and at the pentagon and succeeded in shutting down capital hill, most of the government and slowed the production of major news papers throughout the country.
Because of the method and amount in which it was sent one has to assume it was sent as a warning and not in a way that would have caused the maximum casualty count.
There is no doubt that it was effective in creating fear among all Americans as it made vulnerable the entire national mail system.
And as with our government's failure to respond to the hijackings of 9-11, the failure to secure America's Chemical weapons led to no ones dismissal or even reprimand.
