One of the largest studies of its kind shows just how sluggish American children become once they hit the teen years: While 90% of 9-year-olds get a couple of hours of exercise most days, fewer than 3% of 15-year-olds do.

They are too busy strengthening and training their fingers and thumbs for that fabulous, high-paying job as a video gamer.

Years ago kids dreamed about being the next great baseball, football, or basketball star. Now it's computer programmers and geeks and video gamers. lol.

That was my nephews dream. There are very few jobs in video gaming out there. It is kind of like aspiring to be a rock star or pro athlete. And it pays nowhere near as much.

We played pool, pinball, and foosball when we were kids but that was at night or on weekends after we had done some sort of physical activity.

If these numbers are true it's the parents fault. Get them into some type of activity. No excuse. Teach them there is little value in playing video games other than as a diversion from studies and athletics. And that a computer is a great tool for learning not a playtoy. And that there is certain something to be gained from actually reading a book.

Too many kids get cars when they are 16, too. My primary transportation as a kid was my bicycle and well into my adult years, too, while working my way through college.

Nowadays kids expect to start driving their own cars when they turn 16.

Might help, too, if they yanked the soda pop machines out of schools and parents stopped letting their kids drink the stuff like water.

I introduced my son to just about every sport enrolling him into camps and lessons offered by the City or County rec dept, the Y or the Boys&Girls clubs. I let him select the sports he wanted to continue with. Today, he has his kids active in sports so that they spend hours each day in vigorous activity in soccer, gymnastics, cheerleading (yes, surprisingly, it offers a lot of exercise), wrestling, swimming, basketball or baseball/softball. My observations watching my son and grandkids participate in the various sports is that gymnastics seems to be one of the better sports for all around fitness conditioning (just my opinion).

I used to think male cheerleaders were goofy and an abomination until I got to college. Then I thought: Those lucky bastards! Working out with fit, hot college girls nearly every day definitely has an upside ;)

What I see, mostly, is fat kids who's parents are fat and skinny kids who's parents are skinny.

While this isn't 100% across the board it is, bay far, what I see the most.

Parents need to set examples for their children in all aspects of their lives, especially when it comes to child obesity.

"Parents need to set examples for their children in all aspects of their lives, especially when it comes to child obesity."

Nice thought, newbie. But that would mean that parents would have to assume some responsibility, put down the Kentucky Fried Chicken, turn off "Dancing With the Stars" and extract themselves from the sofa. Most parents these days aren't that multi-task oriented. Besides, isn't the job of raising their kids and setting examples what the government is for? After all, It Takes a Village to Raise a Child.

totally the parents fault. they just dont want to take responsibility. so they blame mcdonalds and other fast food joints. um mcdonalds didnt shove that cheeseburger, large fries and soda down your kids throat! you as the parent bought it. im not saying that you shouldnt eat at mcdonalds or wherever im just saying that you should eat there once in a blue moon and have the majority of the childs food be healthy. it wont kill them to have some vegetables. the reason why kids arent getting enough exercise is because the parent isnt introducing it at a young age. instead of letting your kid play video games for 10 hours enroll them into a sport and do you honestly need to drive everywhere? a little walking never killed anybody. if you dont promote exercise your child is not going to pick up on it. there is something wrong when your 7 year old weighs as much as your 17 year old. parents should be more aware of what their kids do instead of their career or themselves.

We are spending far to much money on our make believe and endless war on terror at the expense of decent schools and after school programs.
